My Skil 100 Planer which is about 43 years old

My Skil 100 Planer which is about 43 years old. The second photo is a close up of the cutting blade depth adjustment lever. In a new Skil Planer this lever is tight to move but you can loosen the screw that holds it to make it loose. When shaping you can vary the depth of cut by sliding this lever in the palm of your hand. A cut can be started on full depth & blended out to zero. You can see two dark patches where the silver finish has worn through where my hand rests & moves on it. The dust shoot is reversible & I cut the bracing section at the bottom off the chute off to enlarge the dust exit hole. Skil planers come with a really long base that protrudes way beyond the handle. When I bought it in Hawaii in 1977 the first thing I did was chop the last part of the base off with a hack Saw. The short base fits a surfboards curves better than a long one. Skil 100 planers have been out of production for years, They are Aluminium & were built to last. It’s nearly impossible to find or buy a good used one. @skil100 @fiberglasshawaii @rawsonsurfboard @dick_brewer @robin_prodanovich @rustysurfboards @gerrylopezsurfboards @tomparrishhawaiiandesigns @mayhemsurfboards_mattbiolos @lowenshaper @1_da_shapes @foam_riders @dahlbergsurfboards @kazumasurfboardshawaii @timponehawaii @pyzelsurfboards @arakawasurfboards @tokorosurfboards #markrichardssurfboards #markrichardsshaping #markrichardsshapes #skill100 #skill100planer

Some vision of me shaping yesterday using a Skil 100 planer

Some vision of me shaping yesterday using a Skil 100 planer. The Blank is a computer cut Pre shape on which I’m making some adjustments to the deck curve & thickness distribution. Planing some thickness out of the area between where you would stand surfing it & adding in some bow to the decks stringer contour. This is my favourite planer, I bought it in Hawaii in the mid 70’s. When I’m cutting shallow & blending I use the back cutting motion of the blades. I’m also adjusting the depth of the cuts while I’m planing by moving the depth cut adjuster with my front hand. Skil planers have a horizontal depth adjustment lever in the front shoe which you can slide with the palm of your hand. @slimesboardstore @surfboardempire @pop_diddy @lowenshaper @waynerichsurfboards @quiksilver @mikypicon @euroglass @stephenisbelly @samueltgriffiths @sammygosling @cidoubleyou @mikereilly1 @boardridersmalibu @boardriderscoolangatta @boardriderstorquay @boardriders_162_campus @fuzzy66 @rawsonsurfboard @mayhemsurfboards_mattbiolos #markrichardssurfboards #markrichardsshapes #markrichardsshaping #mrtwinfin #mrretrotwinfin #mrpuffertwinfin #mrpuffertwinfinmodel #mrpuffer5model #mrpuffer5 #skill100 #skill100planer

I’ve retemplated a KKL computer cut pre shape & I’m using a Skill 100 planer

I’ve retemplated a KKL computer cut pre shape & I’m using a Skill 100 planer on its side to clean up the plan shape. It’s a Puffer Fish model & I’ve taken about an inch out of the tail width & about 1/2″ out of the nose width. You can also clean up outlines using a Sureform & a sandpaper block to finish. I prefer to use a planer as I actually find it easier & more accurate. The cutting adjustment lever on the front shoe of a Skill makes this possible, not sure if you could do it with any other make of planer. The dust extractor chute on a Skill is reversible so you don’t get shot in the face with foam dust. Considering how long ago this planer was designed the design team were geniuses. @pearljam @burfordblanks @darrenburford66 @lowenshaper @lostaustralia @kazumasurfboards @surfboardempire @aleutianjuice @rawsonsurfboard @robin_prodanovich @mayhemsurfboards_mattbiolos @cbradleysurf #markrichardssurfboards #markrichardsshapes #markrichardsshaping #skillplaner #skill100 #skill100planer

Banding the bottom edge of the rails with a Skil 100 planer on my 1979

Banding the bottom edge of the rails with a Skil 100 planer on my 1979 Retro 7’0″ single fin. It’s the last board in the three board quiver from that year which I’ve been in the process of recreating. The lengths of the others are 6’8″ & 7’4″. @burfordblanks @darrenburford66 #markrichardssurfboards #markrichardsshapes #markrichardsshaping #mr1979retrosinglefinmodel #mr1979retrosinglefin #mr1979hawaiicontestquiver #mr1979retrocontestquiver #skill100 #skill100planer #mrsinglefin #mrretrosinglefin

I’m cleaning up the plan shape outline on a KKL computer cut pre – shape

I’m cleaning up the plan shape outline on a KKL computer cut pre – shape using a Skill 100 planer on its side. It’s a custom order & I’ve re template’d one of my Bushranger models into a 6’2″ step up mini gun taking about an inch out of the tail width & about 1/2″ out of the nose width. You can also clean up outlines by sawing off the excess foam then using a Sureform & a sandpaper block to finish. I prefer to use a planer as I actually find it easier & more accurate. The loose cutting adjustment lever on the front shoe of a Skill makes this possible, not sure if you could do it with any other make of planer. @timryan1959 @slimesboardstore @kklmachine @burfordblanks @darrenburford66 @quiksilver @mikypicon @pierre_agnes @stephenisbelly @euroglass @cidoubleyou @mikereilly1 #markrichardssurfboards #mrbushranger #mrbushrangermodel #mrbushrangerroundtail #mrbushrangerroundtailmodel #mrbushrangerroundpin #mrbushrangerroundpinmodel #skill100 #skill100planer @aleutianjuice
