This is my Skil 100 electric planer

This is my Skil 100 electric planer.( you have no idea how much I love this tool !! ). I bought it in Hawaii in 1978 after spending time shaping with Dick Brewer using his Skil. I couldn’t believe how much better it was than the “Towa” I’d been using. It’s made of aluminium so it’s light & well balanced. The best & most unique feature is the small diagonal depth adjuster lever on the shoe which allows you to adjust your cut depth smoothly from nothing to full depth while it’s moving. Incredible for blending cuts, cutting in Concave’s, Vee bottoms & rolling the rails. They come stock with an 181/2″ long base where the “rear foot” extends behind the handle. I think I paid $300 ?? for it & the first thing I did was hack saw 51/2″ off the rear foot taking it back to under the handle. The shorter 13″ base making it even lighter & it fit’s a boards curves better, especially up in the nose area. The ragged bits of electrical tape on the power cord are my “dodgy” repairs where I’ve run over the cord !!! ( I’ve had a few close encounters with the cord plus an incident where my tee shirt got caught & sucked into the blades thankfully seizing up choked with shirt just as it hit skin !!! ( only lost a small chunk of skin on my hip !!). I have 3 other Skil’s but this is “the one”, I know it’s just a tool & they should all feel the same but I don’t think they do ?, for me it’s the “magic” planer. #markrichardssurfboards #markrichardsshapes #markrichardsshaping @rawsonsurfboard @kazumasurfboards @robin_prodanovich @luke_dorrington @mayhemb3_mattbiolos @aleutianjuice @stamps_surf @timponehawaii @chassurfboards @rustypreisendorfer @andrewkidman @tokorosurfboards @waynerichsurfboards @ericarakawadesigns @fiberglasshawaii @euroglass @todd_blatchford @rockdancesurf @phippssurf @dahlbergsurfboards #skil100planer #skil100 @slimes_surf_skate @surfinglife

Blending rail bands yesterday with my Skil 100 Planer

Blending rail bands yesterday with my Skil 100 Planer. As well as using the planer to cut with normal forward motion I also use the back cutting motion as well. Not just on the rails but also in other aspects of shaping with a planer. I find the back cutting motion blends cuts really well when cutting in nose & tail rocker & also with concaves & rails. #skil100 #skil100planer #markrichardssurfboards @burfordblanks

Cleaning up the bump wing, rounded square tail outline with a Sureform after doing most

Cleaning up the bump wing, rounded square tail outline with a Sureform after doing most of it with a Skil 100 Planer on its side. ( part 2 from yesterday’s post ). The board is one of my new “Bushranger 2” models & is a stock board for Slimes Surf & Skate in Newcastle. Fin set up is Thruster using a FCS 2 plugs. The song playing on my shaping room stereo is a live version of “Present Tense” by Pearl Jam. @pearljam @slimes_surf_skate @fcs_surf #mrbushranger2 #mrbushranger2model #skil100planer #skil100 #markrichardssurfboards @pierre_agnes @mikypicon @quiksilver

I’ve drawn a bump wing rounded square outline onto the tail of this “Bushranger 2”

I’ve drawn a bump wing rounded square outline onto the tail of this “Bushranger 2” model & I’m using a Skil 100 planer on its side to take off the excess foam & get close to the pencil line. The Skil planer has a lever on the front to adjust cutting depth so it’s possible to cup the front of the planer with your hand & adjust the amount of foam your taking off as your cutting. I’ll post part 2 of the process tomorrow. @pierre_agnes @quiksilver @mikypicon #markrichardssurfboards #mrbushranger2model #mrbushranger2 #skil100 #skil100planer @pearljam

Banding the rails on an angle

Banding the rails on an angle. I’m using a Skil 100 planer to plane off the bottom edge of my first 45 degree rail cut. When I first started shaping I think it was Geoff McCoy who showed me how to always place the power cord over my arm as it decreased the risk of running over it with the planer’s blades. Once I take off the top edge with the planer I have a rough rail shape which I then finish with hand tools. Either a Sureform, a block with sandpaper on it, or by wrapping a piece of sandpaper around the rail. @burfordblanks #skil100 #skil100planer @pearljam #markrichardssurfboards #mrbushranger2 #mrbushranger2model @mccoysurfboards #geoffmccoy #mccoysurfboards

Banding the rails with a Skil 100 Planer

Banding the rails with a Skil 100 Planer. To shape a rail on a fully hand shaped board consists of cutting one deep 45 degree angle cut from nose to tail. Then the top & bottom of that cuts edges are planed off. This gives you a rough rail shape which can be finished with a sureform, sanding block & a sheet of sandpaper wrapped around the rail. Every shaper has a slightly different way of finishing off rails. #markrichardssurfboards #mrbushranger2model #skil100 #skil100planer @quiksilver @burfordblanks

Shaping action, cutting in & blending the nose rocker curve

Shaping action, cutting in & blending the nose rocker curve. This board is a total hand shape from a Burford Blank, (not a computer cut pre shape). The nose entry rocker is one of the most critical parts of the shaping process. It’s where the water makes initial contact with the bottom, a clean entry curve will paddle well & surf great. When I’m shaping I’m always trying to imagine how the water will flow over the curves I’m creating, especially on a hand shape. #skil100 @peter_mel @burfordblanks #skil100planer #markrichardssurfboards @waynerichsurfboards @mayhemb3_mattbiolos @rawsonsurfboard @aleutianjuice @pearljam

Shaping action blending in a concave yesterday

Shaping action blending in a concave yesterday. This one is going to be a new model & it’s a hand shape from a Burford Blank. Prior to the vision I’ve run the planer straight along the stringer cutting in a 1/8″ deep slot which fades out at the nose & tail. In this video I’m using my Skil 100 planer to blend this initial cut out towards the rail creating a single concave. I use the back cut motion of the planer blades a lot when blending. I shot various stages as I shaped it & I’ll post them over the next few days. #skil100 #skil100planer #markrichardssurfboards @waynerichsurfboards @burfordblanks @robin_prodanovich @mayhemb3_mattbiolos @pop_diddy
