On the beach at “Off The Wall” in 1978 with my 6’4″ Twin Fin. This one became known as the “Free Ride” model. It’s the board I was riding in some of the Off the Wall North Shore sequences in Bill Delaneys movie Free Ride. Dimensions were 21″ wide & 27/8″ thick. So stoked I still have it. The shorts were a favourite pair of Quiksilver scallop legs that I wore for the whole Hawaiian season & the Australian summer. Custom made in Torquay with me picking the colors. I don’t have them any more but wish I did even though there is no way they would fit me now. I think Dan Merkel took the photo. @merkelmedia @quiksilver @mikypicon @samueltgriffiths @sammygosling @yeahbranchy @cidoubleyou @mikereilly1 @stephenisbelly @euroglass @boardridersmalibu @boardriderscoolangatta @boardriderstorquay @boardriders.capbreton @boardriders162 @boardridersericeira @quiksilver_hossegor #markrichardssurfboards #markrichardssprays #markrichardscolordesigns #markrichardsshapes #markrichardsshaping #mrtwinfin #mrretrotwinfin #mr1978retrotwinfinmodel #mr1978retrotwinfin #twinfinfever #twinfinfevercatchit #twinfinsrule #twinfinfever #mrfreeridemodel #mrfreeridetwinfinmodel #mrfreerideretrotwinfinmodel #mrfreeridetwinfin #freeride

These are the second & third Twin Fins I shaped for myself in 1978, the photo was taken in 1990 in the old garage at the back of our shop in Newcastle by Dave Kelly. USA “Surfing Magazine” had commissioned Dave to get some photos of the boards I’d ridden in the movie “Free Ride”. Dave was a bit horrified to see them covered in dust & dirt & wedged in amongst some old furniture & a lawn mower. I offered to clean them up & move them for the photo but he thought the original setting & the way I had stored them enhanced the shot. I still have these 2 boards & I’m now caring for them a little better than I used to. @dave_kelly_water_housings @mark107.87 @marksuttonphoto @lightmoods @slimes_surf_skate @drippingwetsurfshop #markrichardssurfboards #mrfreeridemodel #mrfreeridetwinfinmodel #mrfreerideretrotwinfinmodel #mrtwinfin #mrretrotwinfin #mr1978retrotwinfin #mr1978retrotwinfinmodel @andrewkidman @surfing #freeride #bustindownthedoor

How’s this for a hack !!! Shaun Tomson in the late 1970’s at “Off The Wall” in Hawaii. Shaun’s on the face manoeuvres were often overlooked due to his prowess in the barrel. His tube riding during these sessions where he manoeuvred & adjusted his line in the tube laid down the foundations for the incredible tube rides we see today. The blue board is the famous Safari 7’0″ round pin single fin which was shaped by Spider Murphy in South Africa. Shaun had a couple of great quotes from this era, one was “time is expanded in the tube” & the other was “I felt I could curve the wall to my will”. No one had a personal videographer or a mate with a DVD camera in those days so a lot of amazing surfing was never filmed or documented. As time goes on history is forgotten or is rewritten & interpreted by people who weren’t there. Photo re-posted from @lyttlestreet , I don’t know who took the photo. @spidersurfboards @spidermurphysurf @carlatomson #shauntomson #freeride @merkelmedia

Matt Biolos’s 1978 MR Retro Twin Fin

Matt Biolos’s 1978 MR Retro Twin Fin. It’s just been sprayed by Terry Shin. Dimensions are 203/4″ wide & 27/8″ thick. Bottom shape is flat panel Vee with concave flutes in the wings. Bottom of the rail features a tucked under hard resin edge which runs from the nose tip to the tips of the swallow tail. The 1978 model is a replica of the twin fin I was riding in Bill Delaney’s classic movie Free Ride. @lostsurfboards #markrichardssurfboards #mrtwinfin #mrtetrotwinfin #freeride @mayhemb3_mattbiolos @search4shin
