This photo was taken in 1976 at “Off The Wall” in Hawaii. The Quiksilver shorts were my very first pair & were custom made. Quiksilver founders Alan Green & John Law let me pick the colors for them from the bolts of fabric in the back of the original small @quiksilver showroom / factory in Torquay. ( Not sure what I was thinking with my color choice, maybe not thinking !!! ). I offered to pay for the shorts but they did not charge me. I was so stoked, a free pair of shorts meant I was sponsored by Quiksilver. I do remember how comfortable they were to surf in with the scallop leg compared to what I’d worn previously. I don’t still have them, wish I did, even though I wouldn’t be able to fit my enlarged behind into them now !!. •The Lightning Bolt single fin was one of two shaped for me by Reno Abellira. I’m carrying the 7’8″, the other was 8’0″ long. They were both exactly the same Color, Magenta bottoms & Yellow decks. •I’m riding the 7’8 & wearing the shorts in the second & third photos. I’m guessing Dan Merkel took the photo ? @merkelmedia @mikypicon @cidoubleyou @mikereilly1 @samueltgriffiths @sammygosling @anothery @limowall @quiksilver @wadelamond @rcastro02 @benny_big @yeahbranchy @fuzzy66. @dannyteheuheutukino @renoabellira @rudyland @stephenisbelly @euroglass @boardriderscapbreton @boardriderscoolangatta @boardriderstorquay @boardridersericeira @boardridersmalibu #markrichardscolordesigns #markrichardssprays #markrichardssurfboards #mrsinglefin #mrretrosinglefin #mr1976retrobustindownthedoor #mr1976retrobustindownthedoormodel #mrbustindownthedoormodel #bustindownthedoor #mr1976retrosinglefin #mr1976retrosinglefinmodel

A shot of me taken 44 years ago in 1976 at Rocky Point on the North Shore. The board is a 7’8″ long wing pin Single Fin & it was shaped by Reno Abellira. Reno made me a magic 2 board Quiver that year, both had identical colors, Bolts, Magenta bottoms & Yellow decks. The other board was 8’0″ long. I rode either of the 2 boards everyday alternatively depending on wave size. The 8’0″ was my Sunset Beach board & It was usually the “go to” board for the contests. I rode the 7’8″ even on small days to stay in touch with riding longer boards. The contest waiting periods were long in those days & the events usually always ran in really big surf. I’m not sure who took the photo. I first saw it @silversurfer The Pink & Red shorts were my very first pair of Quiksilver’s with scallop legs. @quiksilver @mikypicon @anothery @cidoubleyou @mikereilly1 @fuzzy66 @samueltgriffiths @sammygosling @renoabellira @rudyland #markrichardscolordesigns #markrichardssprays #mrsinglefin #mrretrosinglefin #mr1976retrobustindownthedoor #mr1976retrobustindownthedoormodel #mr1976retrosinglefin #mr1976retrosinglefinmodel #mr1976bustindownthedoor # #bustindownthedoor

A 43 year old shot of me at Honolua Bay on Maui

A 43 year old shot of me at Honolua Bay on Maui. I’m riding a 7’8″ long Lightning Bolt wing pin single fin shaped by Reno Abellira…. Bernie Baker, Leonard Brady, Mark Warren, Bruce Raymond, Mark Foo, Bobby Owens & I left the North Shore at dawn on a massive Waimea swell & flew to Maui for 3 days. When I get asked about fondest career memories I think people expect a “contest win” answer. But those three days of epic surf with friends & a super mellow Honolua local crew more than happy to share easily tops the list. As well as being one of the best wave’s in the world it must also be one of the most scenically beautiful surf spots anywhere on the planet. I virtually surfed all day every day for 3 days flying back to Oahu completely sizzled & sunburnt. Some vision from this session features in Bustin Down The Door & Free Ride. I think Dan Merkel too the photo ? @merkelmedia I saw it posted @lisetpablo @renoabellira @bernie_baker1 @markwarrensurfs #markrichardscolordesigns #markrichardssurfboards #mrsinglefin #mrretrosinglefin #mr1976retrobustindownthedoor #mr1976retrobustindownthedoormodel #mr1976retrosinglefinmodel #mr1976retrosinglefin #bustindownthedoor #honoluabay

Signing Tony Cohen’s 7’0″ 1976 Retro Wing Pin Single Fin in Yoshi’s factory @takedacustoms at Burleigh Heads on the Goldy. As the board was glassed in Black I could’nt sign the foam. I signed on the glass with a fine white Poska pen. When Yoshi gloss coated the deck the white ink melted & bled so he had to sand it off. He then bought the board to the evening event at the Surfboard Empire in Coolangatta. I signed it in the dark outside the store on Coolangatta’s Main Street. He then clear coated it to seal the writing before gloss coating the deck again. Photo 1, signing in the factory. Photo 2, signing outside the Surfboard Empire. These are the second & third Twin Fins I shaped for myself in 1978, the photo was taken in 1990 in the old garage at the back of our shop in Newcastle by Dave Kelly. USA “Surfing Magazine” had commissioned Dave to get some photos of the boards I’d ridden in the movie “Free Ride”. Dave was a bit horrified to see them covered in dust & dirt & wedged in amongst some old furniture & a lawn mower. I offered to clean them up & move them for the photo but he thought the original setting & the way I had stored them enhanced the shot. I still have these 2 boards & I’m now caring for them a little better than I used to. @dave_kelly_water_housings @mark107.87 @marksuttonphoto @lightmoods @slimes_surf_skate @drippingwetsurfshop #markrichardssurfboards #mrfreeridemodel #mrfreeridetwinfinmodel #mrfreerideretrotwinfinmodel #mrtwinfin #mrretrotwinfin #mr1978retrotwinfin #mr1978retrotwinfinmodel @andrewkidman @surfing #freeride #bustindownthedoor

Off The Wall, North Shore, Hawaii, 1976, I’m riding a 7’8″ long Lightning Bolt wing

Off The Wall, North Shore, Hawaii, 1976, I’m riding a 7’8″ long Lightning Bolt wing pin single fin that was shaped by Reno Abellira. It was 27/8″ thick with a subtle Vee bottom & fluted wings. I also had an 8’0″ from him that was the same color. In 1976 “OTW” was totally uncrowded & always surfed by the visiting Aussies & South Africans. Mike Ho, Dane Kealoha & Timmy Carvelho would make an occasional appearance. Because it was a short ride & had a tendency to close out I think most of the Hawaiian surfers thought of it as a “B” class wave on the North Shore scale. They tended not to bother with it preferring to surf Pipe – Backdoor or Rocky Point. This is a Re Post from @lyttlestreet I discovered the photo when @pyzelsurfboards tagged me. No idea who took the photo. @renoabellira @rudyland #bustindownthedoor #mrbustindownthedoormodel #mr1976retrosinglefinmodel
