Vision of me surfing 43 years ago in 1977 at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast during the Stubbies Classic event. It was always the first contest of the year on the IPS World Pro Tour back then. The event scored epic 4-5′ surf nearly every day over the waiting period with offshore winds every morning & light onshore winds in the afternoons. I was riding a Stinger Single fin shaped by Ben Aipa & manufactured in Hawaii. Dimensions were 6’8″ long. 201/4″ wide & either 23/4″ ? or 27/8″ ? thick. It had a full mural of King Kong sprayed by Al Dove on the bottom. This wave is from a heat. It was the inaugural ” Man on Man” competition format & we wore coloured Stubbies board shorts for judging identification. ( Red or Yellow ). One of the conditions of event entry was that you could not wear your own shorts. You had to wear Stubbies brand shorts or you were not allowed to compete. This Aipa Sting is now on display in the Australia National Surfing Museum ( Surfworld ) in Torquay, Victoria. The surfers from @burleigh_boardriers were vey gracious to give up a week of perfect waves. @lowenshaper @surfboardempire @australianationalsurfingmuseum @bellst204 @aipasurf @akila_aipa @dukeaipa @starksurfforlife @aipaperu @aipa.br @wsl @johnwitzig @bernie_baker1 #benaipa #benaipasurfboards #burleighheads #stubbiespro #stubbiessurfcontest #stubbiesprecast #ipsworldtour
