The board with the flames is an Aipa single fin “Sting” which was shaped by Ben Aipa in Hawaii in 1976. It’s 6’8″, 201/4″ wide & 27/8″ thick. Photo, Jeff Divine. The flame airbrush was done by Al Dove who did all the art on the subsequent boards that I got from Ben. My first surf on it was in Newcastle & I’ve never forgotten how great it felt compared to the single fins I had been riding. It was fast, easy to turn & generally had that really alive magic feeling. I rode it at Bells in the Rip Curl Pro & also in the Coca Cola 2SM Surfabout in Sydney. Ben made me quite a few Stings & was also very forthcoming with tips & advice early on in my shaping career. The middle board in the photo is either the 7’8″ or 8’0″ wing pin Lightning Bolts that were shaped by Reno Abellira. The board on the RHS is an 8’6″ round pin single fin which was shaped by Tom Parrish. This is the board I won the Smirnoff Pro on at Waimea Bay. The only one of these boards that I still own is the Aipa Sting. The Parrish is now owned by Buggs & is part of his private collection in California. I have no idea where the 2 Reno’s are ?
